Hello, I'm Dr Mathew Gicheha

Dr Gicheha holds a doctorate degree in Agricultural Systems Management with bias in Animal Sciences from Lincoln University New Zealand. My PhD study was on the management of climate change and subsequent increase in climatic variability in high performance dryland grazed systems. All production components were integrated into climate risk management systems (see the thesis) which was used to evaluate alternative strategic and tactical responses to the climate change and variability risk. Various publications were generated and are available here

Information About me

Dr Gicheha studied his MSc. Degree in Animal Production (Breeding and Genetics Option) at Egerton University. His thesis was on optimisation of breeding strategies incorporating resistance to gastrointestinal (GI) helminths in meat sheep in Kenya.. It also estimated economic values for resistance to GI helminths under alternative production systems characteristic of smallholder and pastoral producers in order to incorporate resistance to GI helminths in meat sheep breeding objective.
This study evaluated the efficiency of alternative two-tier nucleus breeding systems designed for the improvement of meat sheep in Kenya. The objective of this study was to genetically and economically evaluate different two-tier nucleus breeding systems in meat sheep in Kenya in relation to their implementation within the constraints of the slowly changing local farming conditions in smallholder and pastoral production systems
The study further evaluated the efficiency of alternative schemes breeding for resistance to GI helminths in meat sheep, with an objective of identifying the most efficient (genetically and economically) scheme (s) under local farming conditions in smallholder and pastoral production systems.
